John episode 1 by Ekhosuehi Testimony

The weather has been so warm in recent days, the air so velvety on the skin. It is a spa from the time the light filters over the hills until it too takes its rest. Clouds drift by on the most relaxed of breezes, helping the eyes to appreciate the bluebird sky all the more. The rain, when it comes, alights as softly as the shoes of a ballet dancer, adorning and rejuvenating the only stage that matters. People could be seen on the streets as they are fully awake to fend for themselves, the birds of the air were chirping as if they were engaged in an argument. Vehicles of different kinds were active everywhere, either for private service or public service. A bungalow could be seen at one end, painted with white, having well trimmed flowers to adorn its surroundings. It was built in a modern style, and it shows that the people living there are neither poor nor rich.

“Grin! Grin!!” The alarm which was set to ring at 9am in the morning rang as usual, its sound circulated the entire room, waking up John who slept lately the previous day.

“Could you please be quiet for once?” He said, sleepily. Dragging up himself from his bed as he sat on its edge, and began to boot like an android phone. “What’s the time?” He asked rhetorically, letting out a sigh and equally looking at his wall clock. “Oh, shit! 9 o’clock?” He shouted, rushing to the bathroom for a quick bathe.

“What did I forget?” He asked himself as he got inside the bathroom, realizing he left something he should have carried to the bathroom.

“My towel! Oh, God.” It dawned on him, and he ran back to his main room unclad when he heard a knock three times. Of course it was his mother, who else would It be? They were the only one living in the house. “John? John?” She called.

“Hey, mum!” He replied nervously.

“Do not come inside! I’m unclad.”

“W-why? I heard you shouting, I heard noise.” She said with a worried expression on her face.

“It’s nothing, absolutely nothing. Everything is just fine.” He replied, trying to convince his mother.

“Johnny boy. Are you m-masturbating?” She said with a serious tone.

“Oh, mom!” He replied, quite shock by her question.

“I’m not a kid anymore, you shouldn’t be monitoring me like this. I’m 19, and besides, I do not masturbate.”

“Still a kid to me, boy.” She replied, leaving john to whatever he was doing, and John, who headed to the bathroom to finish his unfinished business.

In few minutes, john was ready for School. He wore a white T-shirt with a matching plain black trouser, coupled with a pair of NIKE shoes, looking handsome. He looked at the gigantic mirror which hung on the wall, admiring his appearance. He had an afro styled hair with oval shaped face and a fair complexion which added to his handsomeness. He left the mirror, headed to the kitchen to meet his mother, Mrs. Monroe. His only parent. His father left when he was just 2 years old. There by, leaving his mother to raise him up all by herself. John couldn’t remember how his father looks like, he has severally asked his mother about his father’s whereabouts, but she never told him anything.

“John Monroe, my boy. You are a handsome young man” she uttered happily as she saw him, moving closer for a warm hug which john reciprocated saying “Mom, flattery is fine, but my food is finer” he grinned, showing his white teeth.

“Oh… yes, your food. You need to eat to get those girls fallin'” she said, equally smiling too.

“Girls? I don’t have anything to do with girls, and what does food has to do with getting girls falling?” he asked quizzically.

“Never mind. Go to the dinning. Your food will be ready in a jiffy.” She retorted, serving breakfast on the plate.

John sighed, and left for the dinning where he sat comfortably, waiting for his mother to serve him. As he sat, he thought about how school is going to be for him that day. He thought about his friends and he equally tried to think about girls, but girls were never his thing. “Am I gay?” He asked himself. “Homo is not acceptable in this country. I cannot be gay. John, stop thinking about such. I, one day, will fall in love or maybe, have a crush.” he smiled to himself. He was in deep though when his mother walked out from the kitchen to the dinning. “Here you go. Your favorite.” she smiled but frowned when she noticed John’s state. “John!” She called, and her voice brought him back to reality. “Oh, mom! Hi.”

“Were you… never mind. Eat your food.” she said, and walked back to the kitchen. “Phew! That was close. Thank God, she didn’t hear me say the word ‘gay’. She’d freak out” he sighed, and began to eat.

In few few minutes, he was done. “Mom! I’m off to school” he said with a loud voice, making sure his mother heard him.

“Alright, be safe!” She replied from the kitchen. John left in a hurry, he was late for school. Although his school was not far, he had to hurry.

John arrived to Western High in a heartbeat. The wind howls as the students arrive through the gates, hustling and bustling down the corridors. Friends are greeting each other with a hug or a playful punch while newcomers stand looking scared. John looked around as if expecting a change. “School again, it never change.” he said, and strolled inside. Western High was one of the best schools in town, It was known globally because it has won competitions, Quizzes both national and international.

John held his backpack tightly as he headed to his classroom, as if he was being cautious of a thief. As he moved, he was halted by a voice which he recognized to be his friend’s, who was running towards him as if he was being pursued by an unseen ghost. “James, James. What’s happening?” John asked, looking concerned.

“You won’t believe this” James replied, trying to catch his breath.

“What is it James?” John asked quizzically, staring into his eyes as if he could find the answer he was looking for in it.

“John, you won’t believe this.” he said excitedly.

“Believe what?”

“Remember my dog?” James asked.

“Yes, I do. What happened to it?” John replied.

“‘It’? No, do not refer to my dog as ‘it’!” James shrieked.

“Stop this suspense thing. What happened to… her?”

“She was put to bed yesterday. She gave birth to 8 bouncing baby puppies” He grinned.

“What?” John shrilled. “Is that why you were running like a domestic animal? And who are you to them? Their father? I guess so.” John said disappointedly.

“Stop being rude, man. You know how much I love my dog. Plus, I’ve got an even more exciting news.” James replied excitedly, rubbing his palms together.

“What news?” John asked, folding his hands and posed in such a way that shows he was interested.

“There’s this new girl in school, and I think you are gonna like her.” James said winking.

“Haha. Funny. So? How does that concern me, James?” He said disappointingly.

“Well, I know you are gonna like her, and oh! She’s pretty. Even Hannah would be…” James was cut short by Hannah who stood behind them.

“Even Hannah would be what?” She asked, looking beautiful as always. Hannah was dark in complexion, average height, and slender.

“Hey! Hannah. Good to see you!” The boys chorused.

“Save it! What were you boys saying about me?” She asked, standing arms akimbo.

“Oh, there’s this school competition coming up next week and we thought that you would love to participate.” James said, grinning.

“Competition? I wasn’t aware.” She said, looking at them suspiciously.

“Oh, maybe you came in late.” James defended.

“Whatever!” Hannah said, diverting her attention to John who stood beside James. “Johnny boy, I missed you. I missed you so much.” She said romantically.

“Oh, I missed you too.” John replied, nervously.

“Really?” She asked with smiles.

“Yes, I do.” He replied, trying to maintain composure.

“Awwn. I knew…” the school bell rang, stopping Hannah from completing her statement.

“Oh, I have to go now.” He said, using the opportunity to dodge whatever she was gonna say.

John left dragging James along, who followed him like a 4-year-old child.

“Why did you do that?” James asked as they walked through the school corridor which was packed with students. “She’s a Devil in a Sheep’s clothing.” He retorted, frowning.

“Hmm. Hot Devil, I agree. But, that’s not the reason you left in such manner, is it?

“I’m just avoiding her drama.” john replied.

“Drama? Hmm. You like her, don’t you?”

“I do not.”

“You do.”

“I do not.”

“John, are you gay?”

“Just shut your round mouth with annoying sound. You nutcase.”

“‘Nutcase’? Hmm. That’s new.”

John increased his pace as he hurried to class, leaving James behind. He walked absentmindedly, thinking about James’ question. He was deep in thought when he bumped into a girl who was just leaving the class for the restroom.

“Are you blind? Do you need medicated glasses? Watch where you are going next time, moron.” She shrieked, and the entire class, especially the girls turned to them to watch the drama. John’s friends, who were equally watching the scene, gave him the “how could a girl talk to you like that” look. Of course he understood the look. He neither wanted to retaliate nor create a scene. But what could he do?

“You bitc…😳” John halted when his eyes caught with hers. He couldn’t speak but stare. “I’m sorry.😳” He manage to say, letting out a sheepish smile.

“Whatever.🙄” She said and walked out, shaking her butts vigorously.

The classroom was well furnished, it has a wide marker board at the front of the class, a typical school chairs and tables everywhere which anyone who is new, without being told would know that the population of the class is many.

“Nice way to begin this semester.😣” He sighed, and walked lazily to his seat, avoiding eye contact from his classmates. He got to his seat where he met his friends who were staring at him as if he was a ghost.

“What’s up with you guys?😕” He asked.

“You are asking us what?😐 She called you blind, man. And a moron too.” One of them, Oliver, often referred to as Soccer King, who sat comfortably on his seat said. He is fair in complexion with oval shaped face and often wears eyeglasses. He wore a red T-shirt, coupled with a plain black trousers and sneakers. “Man. That was harsh. Blind.” He emphasized.

“It’s no big deal.😇” John said with smiles, averting his eyes from Oliver.

“No big deal?😕 What if I was the one that called you blind?” Richard, who was sitting next to Oliver said with a serious look.

“He would have called your Momma a b---h.😁” Christopher, one of them said, laughing like a new deranged man, whose madness is snowballing.

“Whose Momma?😠” Oliver asked with a serious tone, clenching his fists, moving close to Christopher as if he is about to wrestle while Christopher adjusted like a scared little kid, covering his face with his hands.

“Hey, lads. Stop! You’d end up disgracing yourselves.” John said, smiling incessantly. He was about to say something when a teacher, Mr. Harrison entered the class, followed by the girl John bumped into, who was just coming back from the restroom, locating her seat.

“What’s the new girl doing with Mr. Harrison? I think John’s is in trouble for bumping into her.” Richard whispered to Christopher, who laughed for no reason while John smiled widely.

“I do not think so. The way they walked in, it shows they are not together. And besides, she wouldn’t report to a teacher just because someone bumped into her.” Oliver said smartly.

“Fine… I never knew you know what she could do and what she couldn’t.” Richard said frowning.

“Leave Mr. Know it all alone. The only man that knows everything except his date of birth.” Christopher said teasingly, making sure he smiled widely to annoy Oliver.

“I know my date of birth, you dirty pig.” Oliver defended, giving an angry look.

“Pigs are always dirty. I have never seen a clean one.” Richard said, caressing his beard which were newly sprouting.

“You know what, Oliver? You should have been the one the new girl called ‘BLIND’.” Christopher began, stretching the word “blind.”

“You know why? Because you are the one wearing eyeglasses.” Christopher concluded teasingly, while they all laughed including john who never stopped smiling.

“Hey. How many fingers am I holding up?” Christopher asked, in an effort to tease Oliver again.

“And how many semesters are you willing to repeat, Christopher?” Mr. Harrison cut in, giving them a stern look which made them quiver. Mr. Harrison, their Mathematics teacher, who never smiled for any reason because he believes no serious man smiles randomly. He was like a dreaded plague to the students, this made many to run from him.

“How many semesters are you willing to repeat, Christopher?” Mr. Harrison repeated.

“I’ve never repeated any semester.” Christopher said to himself, making sure he wasn’t heard.

“Would you like to share to the class, that thing so amusing, that thing y’all found so delightful that the four of you couldn’t help but to explode in a mirthful guffaw?” Mr. Harrison asked, looking serious as usual, standing arms akimbo, fixing his fierce gaze upon them while the class turn to their direction.

“Sir, we were admiring your tie!” Christopher shouted inadvertently and fearfully, which made him look stupid, making Richard to cover his face with one hand;”I curse the day you were born, Chris.” Richard lamented.

“My tie? What does my tie has to do with ‘holding up fingers’? Mr. Harrison asked, folding his hands.

“Christopher said I couldn’t see how beautiful your tie looks. He was skeptical when I claim I could see it despite my glasses. His skepticism made him say that.” Oliver lied smartly, leaving the boys astound with his mighty lie, especially Christopher, who jaw dropped due to the intensity of the lie.

“Close that mouth or you will be needing a wedge for it after I am done with you.😠” Richard threatened, making Christopher close his mouth instantaneously.

“Oh… is that it?” He asked. “Johnny boy.” Mr Harrison called, bringing John back to reality.

“Oh, Hi, Sir. Good to see you.” He said, not knowing why he was called or what was said before he was being called.

“Why are you smiling incessantly? Would you like to share the cause of your amusement?😕 We all could use some.” Mr. Harrison said, while the whole class focused their attention on him.

John was speechless, he kept searching for cover-ups, but he couldn’t. How could he say it? How will he put it? At that moment, he wished the floor could open and swallow him.

“Cat got your tongue?” Mr. Harrison asked John who stood like the statue of liberty.

“Sir… I-I-I.” John stammered.

“Oh… I never knew you had a childhood-onset fluency disorder. And class…” Mr. Harrison turned swiftly to the entire class with a stern look. “What’s a childhood-onset fluency disorder?” He asked to nobody in particular. Expecting anybody to answer his question. Of course John and Oliver were familiar with the term, but they decided to keep quiet. Mr. Harrison searched with his eyes critically to see any student raising a hand in an attempt to answer the question, but nobody was able to answer it. “Oh, I never knew this class could be this quiet. Since I got no answer, I am gonna…” Mr. Harrison paused when he noticed a girl raising her hand. “You want to answer it?” He asked the girl who nodded with affirmation.

“You are new aren’t you?” He asked her, but threw another question before she could answer the first one. “What’s your name, young lady?” He asked, gazing upon her.

“My name is Vivian.” She said, while standing up.

“Oh, Vivian. As devilish as her name sounds.” Richard whispered to Oliver, when Mr. Harrison diverted his attention to Vivian who stood boldly.

“Vivian is a nice name, you idiot.”

“Whatever.” Richard said, rolling his eyes.

“A childhood-onset fluency disorder…” she began. “… is a speech disorder that involves frequent and significant problems with normal fluency and flow of speech. People who stutter know what they want to say, but have difficulty saying it. For example, they may repeat or prolong a word, a syllable, or a consonant or vowel sound. Or they may pause during speech because they’ve reached a problematic word or sound.” Vivian concluded smartly.

Mr. Harrison is a very hard person to please or impress, and when pleased or impressed, he never shows it. He always finds fault in a student. “Nice one, but should have given us an example.” He complained. “But, sir. I gave an example.” Vivian defended.

“I meant you should have demonstrated.” He covered up. “I’ll rate you 5/10. You would have got 9, or possibly, 10 if you had given us example. Howbeit, you tried. Take a seat all of you.” He said, then turned to the marker board while the students who were standing began to settle for their seats, bringing out class instruments.

“John?!” Mr. Harrison called out, thereby, alluring John’s attention, who stood up to answer his called. He equally tried to maintain his composure because he knew the calling was of no good.

“It seems…” Mr. Harrison began.

“It seems these hoodlums of a friend you have are corrupting you. I have always known you to be a decent student.” He said as he turned to a girl sitting beside Vivian. “Could you please do me a favour by switching seats with John?” He asked politely while the girl stood up without replying and walked straight to John’s seat, giving him the “what are you waiting for” look.

“Today is doomsday for you, bro.” Christopher said, giving John a naughty smile.

John moved slowly to the seat which he was asked to sit. He tried to maintain his composure, despite the uneasy feeling he had. The class activities kicked off immediately, the class for that day was uneventful, the toppers paid attention while some hooligans had immoral actives going on in class which Mr. Harrison didn’t notice.

The class ended in a flash, students started trooping out while some stayed behind to have some discussion best known to them. John stood up to leave without hesitation, he had earlier prayed for the discontinuance of the class, he picked up his bag and books furiously, as he turned to leave, he felt a tender touch on his left arm which made him to stop where he was. “Who could it be?” He thought inwards. “Could it be that Vivian wants to apologize?” He smiled at his own words, turning slowly to the direction of the person holding him, but unfortunately, he saw the disappointment of his life.

John smiled at his own words, turning slowly to the direction of the person holding him, but unfortunately, he saw the disappointment of his life.

“Hey, Johnny boy.” Hannah said, smiling, trying to be romantic.

“Oh, God! This she devil!” He said inwards, stretching his neck to know the direction Vivian went.

“Who or what are you looking for?” Hannah said curiously as she glimpse behind her, and returned her attention to John with a worried look.

“Hannah…” John began, looking at her eye-to-eye.

“I have to go now…” he said, and walked away to catch up with Vivian, leaving Hannah confused and speechless.

Hannah was the queen bee of Western High, she was known to be rude, harsh and trashes anyone who dare oppose her. She gets whatever she wants, no one dare messes with her. An instance, when she beat up a girl just because she stepped on her. The cause of this attitude was because her parents are stinkingly rich, and influential.

Hannah stood at the doorway, boiling with anger, she didn’t understand what just happened. “If I don’t get him, no one will.” She said, smiling.

**************************************

:

“Hey, Vivian.” John called as he walked briskly to meet her with an increased heartbeat.

“What do you want? Wanna bump into me again?” She asked, as she turned swiftly, glaring at John.

“Hey, it’s not that.” John began with a remorseful look on his face.

“I just wanted to say I’m sorry for bumping into you earlier.” He apologized.

“It’s okay. We all make mistakes, that’s what makes us human.” Vivian finally retorted after some minutes of silence, giving John a charming smile.

“I’m Vivian.” She introduced herself, stretching her hand for a handshake which John didn’t hesitate to respond to.

“I’m John, John Monroe. Nice to meet you.” He said as they shoke hands.

“The pleasure is ineffably mine.” Vivian replied.

“Care to go to the canteen with me?” John asked.

“That’s if you are buying for two.” She replied and they both laughed.

“That wouldn’t be a problem.”

They headed to the school Cafeteria which was a large building as part of the school, well painted, it has stylish chairs and tables at every corner which some has been occupied by students who were chatting and eating.

John and Vivian settled on an empty seat after getting something for launch. They talked and laughed, it was like they have known each other for ages. While they were chatting, James sighted them together, he was quite shock how well they were going, he looked at them for a few seconds and walked closer to their seat. “I see you have met the new girl I told you about.” James said, smiling.

“What do you mean?” Vivian asked, quizzically. Looking at James and then John.

“Um… don’t mind him. He always say things he is not suppose to.” John defended, glaring at James. Of course James got the message, he introduced himself as John’s friend and left them.

“What was he saying?” Vivian asked, looking at John, waiting for answers.

“He was just kidding, that’s how he is.” John lied.

“I believe you. I have to go somewhere now, I’ll catch you later.” Vivian said as she stood up and walked out. Leaving John alone in the canteen. As soon as she left, Oliver, Christopher, and Richard came out from nowhere, hailing John, saying “You’ve got her, you’ve got her…” The trio have been watching the both of them.

“Keep your voices down, guys.” John said, trying to shut the boys up.

“Keep our voices down? Hell no.” Richard said, laughing.

“He’s in love!” Christopher shouted, raising his hands up.

“You guys are embarrassing me!” John said, looking confused.

“Was that the reason why you were smiling like an idiot in class?” Oliver asked, smiling while taking a seat.

“Yes, I think it was. But, it’s no big deal.” John retorted.

“No big deal?” Richard asked, widening his eyes.

“I think he’s he love. My theory was correct.” Oliver bragged and they rest of the boys became silent, pausing as if they were being controlled by a remote.

“Why the silence? My theory was correct.” Oliver reiterated.

“Did he talked about a theory that states John is in love?” Christopher asked Richard in form of a whisper.

“None that I know of.” Richard replied.

“Guys, guys. Stop this. I only have a crush on her, I do not love her.” John said, spreading his hands.

“Love, and crush are the same, bro.” Oliver said, putting his hands in the table, leaning forward towards john.

“What do you know about love? You can’t see love through those eyeglasses of yours.” John teased and they all laughed.

“Wait, wait. What do you see in that girl?” Richard asked, looking serious.

“Maybe he is blind as she said.” Christopher said, chucking.

“You guys should leave me alone.” John said, trying not to answer Richard’s question.

“Let’s leave lover boy alone. I’m glad he won’t get to be a Reverend father. Don’t die a virgin, bro.” Oliver said with smiles.

“Devils.” John cursed down his breath.

Some minutes later, the school bell rang, signifying the end of the recess, students started trooping out of the canteen, some leaving one by one when Hannah came into the canteen, luckily for John, she was not around when John and Vivian were together, and when the trio of John’s friends were shouting and discussing Vivian, she would have created a scene there. Hannah surged forward through the canteen, locating the place she left her books, and she was gripped by the arm by her friend, Lucy; dragging her to one of the corners of the canteen.

“What’s it? Hannah asked, looking confused.

“I have something to tell you.” Lucy began.

“It’s about John, and the new girl, Vivian.”

“What?!” Hannah shrieked in anger.

“Calm down.” Lucy said, trying to ameliorate her anger. It was obvious that jealousy was taking over.

“I only saw them chatting, and laughing.” Lucy said, nervously.

“But you said immediately she left, his friends came, started hailing him” Hannah said, boiling in anger.

“Yes, that’s true.” Lucy said.

“But, it doesn’t mean anything. I just thought I should let you known since you like him.” Lucy said smiling, in an effort to make Hannah smile too but, her effort was futile.

“She’s gonna regret this. She thinks she can just come and snatch my man from me?” She asked rhetorically.

“But, he’s not your man yet.” Said Lucy.

“Shut that hole in your face, b---h.” Hannah said, glaring at Lucy.

“She’s sure gonna regret this.”

**************************************:

School activities ended by 3pm that Monday, students started leaving in groups, saying their goodbyes to friends while some students, especially the male students had a match with another school, Eastwood High. A match Oliver was never gonna miss.

“Bro, you coming? Let’s go play football.” Oliver asked john who held his backpack in a one–hand style.

“I’m sorry, but I gotta go home and be with me Mom. She’s home alone.” John said, turning down Oliver’s request. Oliver understood everything, how his Dad left him when he was young, how his Mom worked to make sure he goes to school.

“I’m sure you’ll be needing enough time to think about Vivian.” Oliver said jokingly as John frowned, giving Oliver a playful punch.

“I guess so.” John said, they both smiled.

“Alright, then. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Oliver said swiftly, as he was about to into the school Field. They both shook hands and said their goodbyes as usual and parted opposite ways.

John strolled through the road leading to his house, kicking anything he sees in sight. The road was filled with people, selling all kinds of stuff, students who were returning home from school. The cacophonic sounds of different vehicles could be heard, marketers advertising their products to prospects. John surged through the street as he came across a white bungalow with trimmed flowers as decoration for its surrounding, his home.

“Home, sweet home.” He said to himself as he walked to the front door, gripped the door knob, turned it leftwards, and pushed it forward revealing the living room. The living room was painted with white, giving a striking similarity with the exterior. It was well furnished with expensive chairs, it has a 64 inch Samsung plasma TV hanging on its wall, with a center table at the center.

John walked straight to the kitchen to please his belly. He knew his Mom was not at home. He walked briskly to the kitchen to get food, he knew he’d have something delicious. His mouth was already filled with saliva, when he got close to the kitchen, he stood at the doorway as someone who saw a ghost and couldn’t move a limb. The cooking pot was as neat as the sky in a sunny morning. He trudged slowly towards the pot, gazing at it as if they were both engaged in “Gazing Competition.” It was as if it was the pot Rihanna got the line of her song from; “shine bright like a diamond.”

“What could have happened today?” He asked himself, thinking critically, then he thought.”It could be in the fridge.” His Mom never forgets to prepare food for him. He walked briskly to where the refrigerator stood. A long white Thermocool fridge, about his height. John open it slowly, in expectance to see food.

“Ah!” He screamed, overjoyed with what he saw.

“I love you mom.” He muttered.

He finished the food within minutes, it was late in the night, and his mother wasn’t back from work. He became worried, and kept having negative thoughts. “What if something has happened to her? How will I cope?” He asked rhetorically. His mother has never being this late. He dialed her number several times and it was not going through. He stayed awake till 8:30pm, he couldn’t get any sleep. He made up his mind to go look for this Mom that night when he heard a knock on the door. He walked briskly towards it not minding to ask who it was. As he opened the door, he saw his Mom and gave her a tight hug.

“Well, this is new.” Mrs. Monroe said, surprisingly.

“Where did you go?” John said as he let her in.

“Well, I was held in traffic, and my phone was down. I know you tried to call me.” She said, smiling.

“How was school today?” Mrs. Monroe asked as she settled on one of the chairs.

“It was fine, Mom.” John retorted, smiling as the thought of Vivian came into is head.

“What’s the update?” Mrs. Monroe asked, looking at James who kept smiling.

“It’s nothing, Mom.” John lied.

“Anyways, the girl must be pretty.” She said, smiling.

“Whatever, Mom. Goodnight.” He said as he yawned.

“Goodnight, dear.” His mother replied. Stood up and gave him a hug.

John went to his room and crashed on his bed, feeling tired and sleepy.

“What a day.” He said, and drift into sleep.

Episode 7

:

Vivian laid on John’s thigh in a way that only her head was on his thigh as both were outside on a bench. She wore a white crop top coupled with a skinny jean that made the shape of her posterior visible.

The weather that night was so pleasant, a full moon and stars could be seen in the sky as fresh soothing breeze blew. The sound of vehicles and chattering of traders have gone down as many of them have gone home to meet their family, thereby, giving a peaceful atmosphere for the two teenagers.

“I love you.” Vivian said to John sincerely.

“I love you, too, Vivian.” John replied, both of them smiled at each other.

“Promise to be with me forever.” John said, and Vivian began to caress his face romantically. Her touch was so tender, John wished that moment could last forever. Suddenly, her touch became hard and rough. John felt pain on his face though he wasn’t hit by anybody or so he thought.

“You just have to wake up, John.” Vivian said.

“I’m awake, sweetheart.” John said with smiles.

“Just wake up.”

“I’m wake. What do you mean?”

“Wake up, John!” His mother’s voice came through and John jumped up from the bed holding his face. Then it dawned on him, “it was all a dream.”

“Mom, what’s the meaning of this? I was having a peaceful sleep!.” John complained, still holding his face.

“Oh… a peaceful romantic sleep where you were saying ‘I love you, too’, promise to be with me forever’, blah, blah, blah.” She said, mimicking John. “I’m Sorry to interrupt, but you are gonna be late for school again…” Mrs. Monroe said as she left John’s room, leaving the door ajar. John looked at the wall clock, it was 8:15am in the morning, he knew he had to prepare for school. He went to his wardrobe to select his clothes for that day. He brought out a blue T-shirt with Superman’s logo on it. He equally brought out a black skinny jean coupled with a NIKE footwear. John hurriedly went to the bathroom, not forgetting his towel this time. He took a quick bath and he was set in no time. He headed to the dinner to eat his food, he was having noodles for breakfast which was already served. John settled down on an iron chair, designed with a black Corinthian leather. “Yummy”, he said to himself.

In few minutes, John was filled and could throw a punch if it comes to that. He wiped his mouth and stood up, shifting the chair backwards, gently.

“Mom. I’m set.” He said, loudly.

Mrs. Monroe came out of the kitchen, gave John a hug. “Stay out of trouble, don’t make bad friends, and come home safe.” She advised.

“I know, I will.” John assured.

“Don’t forget to buy Vivian a rose. I’m sure she likes roses, doesn’t she?” Mrs. Monroe asked. Leaving John shocked and confused.

“Y-you mean? W-who? I said that out loud in my dream?” John stuttered.

“Don’t try to play smart with me, dear. I know when you are lying. Your forehead turns red, and you stammer when you lie. Just like your father.” Mrs. Monroe said, smiling while John frowned. He had a lot of questions to ask about his father. He couldn’t remember how he looks, he left when he was just 2 years old.

“Mum.” John called.

“Don’t even think about it.” Mrs. Monroe said, turning away from John.

“I have to know something, anything there is to know about my Dad, mum.” John said with a sad look on his face.

“I don’t want to talk about him. Perhaps, next time.”

“Mum, you have to.” John shrieked.

“No, it breaks me to talk about him. It brings back bad memories when I think about him. How he left us! How he left me to cater for you, to support you, John.” Mrs. Monroe said amidst tears.

“You still have to tell me. What happened to him? Is he dead!?” John shrilled.

“No, John. He is very much alive with another woman, with kids!” Mrs. Monroe said.

“Where is he? You still have to tell me.” John insisted.

“Fine! You wanna find him? His name is Bruce Regan, he should be 49 years old by now. He is tall, dark in complexion, afro hair cut, broad shouldered and wears suit most of the time!” Mrs. Described with gestures.

“Good luck finding him.” She left John in the living room, who stood like a statue. He knew going after his mother that moment wasn’t a good idea. He had to let her be.

John sighed and shook his head. He headed out of the house into the street. The usual morning activities for traders and taxi drivers has begun. Pedestrians could be seen on the walkway, some women, some men and even children who have different places to go. John didn’t mind what was going on around him, he felt emotional. He doesn’t even know his own father, how he looks or where he lives. “What a shame.” He thought inwards and focused on his journey.

John got to school in an eye blink. Boys and girls could be seen at every corner; chatting and laughing. Some students have started arriving on foot while some by cars. The environment was filled already with students who were either heading to class or hanging around doing what normal teenagers do. John headed to class looking serious. He was about to enter when Hannah came out, holding her backpack.

“Hey, John.” She said smiling.

“Hey.” John replied with a frown which Hannah noticed and it was unlike him.

“What’s happened?” Hannah asked, showing concern.

“It’s nothing.” John replied and walked out of her. Hannah was angry, she blamed John’s action on Vivian. It was obvious that she was jealous. Hannah was a rude person and was not liked my many people except her pawns. As she stood close to the doorway, Lucy came by. “What just happened?” Lucy asked.

“I think Vivian has bewitched him. She’s gonna pay.” Hannah said.

“But how?” Lucy asked curiously and Hannah brought out a glue from a bag.

“I put a glue on her chair, and razor blades in her bag. When she tries to find something in her bag, it will cut her.. She’s sure gonna be sorry.” Hannah said, smiling.

“Of course, you came prepared.” They smiled at each other.

The school bell rang loudly to the hearing of every student. It signifies that classes are to commence immediately. Students could be seen hurrying to class while some were not bothered. Hannah and Lucy walked briskly to class in other to witness they evil plan against Vivian. They got inside the class, to see students who were settled, waiting for their teacher, while some where still settling. Hannah and Lucy located their seats which was at the back. They got there and sat beside each other, waiting for Vivian to fall victim for their trap.

“Is she gonna show up?” Lucy whispered to Hannah.

“Of course, what kinda idiot will miss the second day of school?” She asked

“Hannah. Remember you missed the second day of school last semester.” Lucy said, expressionlessly.

“Forget about that. That was different.” Hannah said, looking away when her eyes caught John who was chatting and laughing with his friend, she smiled; admiring him. “If I don’t get him, no one will.” She said to herself, smiling but her expression changed she saw Vivian walked in with their Chemistry Teacher, Mr. Chadwick, who happened to be their form teacher, about 42years of age. Mr Chadwick wore a with plain long sleeve, a black trouser with black belt to match, coupled with a shinny shoe looking like a Jehovah’s Witness. He held different textbooks and a marker pen. Mr. Chadwick was known to be a no-nonsense person, more strict than Mr. Harrison. He comes to class, and do whatever he came to do.

“Good morning, class.” Mr. Chadwick greeted, walking to his seat.

“Good morning, Sir.” The students retorted in unison

“Welcome back to school.” He welcomed the students, with a smile which was gonna be the last smile they’d see that semester. “So, some of you already know me and my rules and some of you do not know me and are not familiar with my rules. Especially that girl still standing.” He said, pointing at Vivian who was yet to settle on her seat.

“Come here.” He said. Looking serious.

Vivian walk to him, trembling.

“What’s your name?” Mr. Chadwick asked, fixing his gaze upon her.

“I’m Vivian. Vivian Andrew.” Vivian replied.

“Oh, Vivian. I will spare you because you are a green horn. Now, go to your seat.” He commanded and Vivian turned to leave, but he called her back.

“Wait. I will reshuffle everybody.” He said, looking at every direction of the class. Students were surprised, while some were already expecting him to do so. The class began to murmur, creating a disorganized atmosphere.

“Silence!” He shouted. The whole student became mute as if being controlled be a TV remote.

“Anybody got a problem with that?” He asked, knowing no student would dare oppose. “I thought so.”

“On your feet, class!” He commanded, and everybody stood up immediately. Mr. Chadwick began to reshuffle each student to a different seat and this wasn’t taking much time. “Hannah!” He called. “You happen to be the last Person. No more backbenching for you from this semester henceforth. Come seat here.” He commanded, pointing at Vivian’s old seat. “But, Sir” Hannah said, trying to protest.

“But what? Come seat here. Spoilt brat.” He insulted. Hannah walked wearily to he seat, she has suddenly lost her strength. She got there and stood, refusing to seat. “What are you waiting for, young lady?” Mr. Chadwick asked.

“But, Sir. There’s glue on the seat.” She complained. “There is a what?” Mr. Harrison asked, walking towards it. Hannah knew that if he finds out. It won’t be good for her. She will be found guilty for trying to harm a fellow student, and she will be rusticated. They will figure out she did it because she earlier hesitated, and she didn’t observe the seat properly before she knew there was glue. Of course, some glue are transparent. What would she do to get out of this situation? Her plans backfired.

“Where is the glue?” Mr. Chadwick asked, as he got to the seat.

“Oh… Sir, no glue.” She said, giving a fake smile as she sat on it. She was afraid of being rusticated from school.

“You be careful.” Mr. Chadwick warned, walking back to the white board.

“I will, Sir.” Hannah assured.

The class of that day was interesting, they covered many areas of the syllabus. Hannah didn’t move an inch during the class. She smiled sheepishly at anything done or said. The bell rang, signifying the end of the lecture hour and time for recess. Students started going to the field to play football, while some to the canteen to please their stomach, moving either alone, in duo, or trio.

************************************

“Hey.” Vivian called as she saw John in the field. John turned back as he recognized her voice. She wore a black T-shirt with a black skinny jean, combined with a black all-star footwear with a white sole.

“Hi.” She greeted when she got to where he was standing.

“How are you?” John asked, smiling.

“I’m fine, thank God.” She said, as her facial expression changed.

“Do you know anybody who would want to harm me? I saw three razor blades in my bag.” She asked.

“No. Seems you’ve got an enemy. Don’t worry, they are jealous of your beauty.” He said, smiling as he puts his hands in his pocket.

“Don’t flatter me. I haven’t done anything to anyone.” She said as she wore a worried look.

“Did you by any means call someone blind, or a clown?” John asked.

“Why would I?” Vivian returned the question.

“Maybe… someone bumped into you or something?

“No, no. Come on. Stop it!” She said, giving John a playful punch as they both laughed heavily.

“Seems we are getting along so well.” John said softly, looking at Vivian in the eye.

“Yeah, sure.” She also said, softly as they stared at each other, moving closer, but was interrupted by Vivian’s friend, Annabelle.

“Hey, Vivian. I’ve been looking for you.” Annabelle said as she drew closer.

“Hey, Anne. I came looking for John.” Vivian said to Anne, smiling.

“Oh… hi, I’m Annabelle.” Anne said as she stretched her hand for a hand shake.

“I’m John, John Monroe. Nice to meet you.” John introduced himself as they shook hands.

“The pleasure is ineffably mine.”

They got along so well, chatting and laughing together.

The rest school activities was uneventful, the school bell signifying the end of lecture hours for that day soon rang. Students started strolling out in pairs, holding their backpack.

**************************************

:

Hannah was still in class sitting on the same position, glued to the seat. She struggled, trying to pull herself off the chair, she groaned clenching her teeth, but she couldn’t. She needed help. She dialed Lucy’s number, and it began to ring.

“Pick up, pick up. Come on.” She said, looking at her screen.

“Hello?” Lucy responded.

“Why are you? How could you leave me like this?”

“I’m outside. I thought you could handle yourself.”

“Come help me. I can’t get up.” Hannah said as she hung up, and began struggling.

“Oh, come on.” She struggled.

Lucy came in hurriedly, dropping her bag on one of the chairs.

“Hey. Let me help you.” Lucy said as she held the chair. “Now, get up” Lucy said, holding the chair. Hannah groaned, pulling herself up. She finally pulled herself up and they both paused when they heard a sound. What could it be? They looked at the chair, seeing part of Hannah’s dress on it, and looked back at each other.

What kinda glue did you use?” Lucy asked surprisingly.

“A triple X glue.” Hannah said nervously, looking at the chair and back at her dress. Her black underwear was clearly visible to the eyes, revealing the shape of her posterior.

“What are we gonna do?” Lucy asked.

“We come in and help you.” Some boys who were looking through the window said, and laughed as they record the scene with their mobile phones with naughty looks on their faces. Hannah knew the news will soon circulate. She couldn’t utter a word. It was as if she was struck dumb.

“Oh, no. I guess it’s dooms day for you.” Lucy managed to say.

Episode 10

The video went viral around the school the next day. Students could be seen in pairs with their phones, watching and laughing in the school corridor.

“Look at the great Queen Hannah.” One of the students said, and the others laughed.

Hannah walked through the corridor, wearing a black jeans with a black crop top with white stripes, looking ashamed. She couldn’t look at any student in the eye as she bend her head downwards, walking as fast as her leg could take her. Of course she already know what was going on.

“Hey, Princess. Aw. What’s wrong?” They mocked. She couldn’t say a word, the students hated her before so they used the opportunity to mock her. As she surged through the school corridor hurriedly, the school principal, Mr. Nathaniel called her.

“Hannah!”

In my office now! he commanded, raising his voice which frightened Hannah, and walked to his office and Hannah followed suit, forcing her legs to walk her… They got to the office, Mr. Nathaniel settled down his his seat, adjusting his spectacles. Gray hair, mixed with black could be seen on his head, he’s a man in his late fifties, he wore a black sleeve, he had a red tie on his neck, coupled with a black plain trouser.

Hannah sat there, looking like a lost dog as Mr. Nathaniel busi-ly went through some files in front of him. Silence circulated the entire office as if they were in a ‘ silence’ competition.

What happened? he asked, breaking the silence.

“I-I don’t know what you are talking about, sir.” She retorted, frightened.

“What do you mean you don’t know? Your nude is in the entire school. And you don’t know?!” He shrieked.

Hannah was shocked at the mention of ‘nude’. “It was just my underwear, nothing more, nothing less. It’s not nude.” She said inwards, ignoring Mr. Nathaniel who kept shouting.

“Now, I will ask you one last time. What happened? If I don’t get an answer you will be expelled!” He threatened.

“Expelled?” Hannah asked, confirming what she heard.

“Yes, you heard me. EX-Pell-ED” he repeated, stretching the word.

“But sir, I-I” she stammered.

“Don’t buts me you teeny tiny itchy bitchy rotten child.” He said, harshly.

“Some one put a glue on my seat!” She lied, putting both hands on her face as tears dropped ceaselessly.

“Oh glue? Who did it?!” He asked, and adjusted his spectacles.

“I don’t know sir.” She lied,again.

“Oh I will find out, today!”. He said, as he hit the table with his fist.

“Now get out! You are expelled.”

“But sir, that’s not enough reason to expel me.”

“Get out! I don’t believe you. I want to see your father!”

Hannah stood up, picked up her bag and headed towards the door which was ajar. She stormed out, and bump into John who held her firmly, preventing her from falling.

“Hey. Why the rush?” John asked.

“It’s nothing, I have to go now.” Hannah retorted, and left in a rush.

“What was that all about?” John asked rhetorically. He looked towards the Principal’s door which was slightly open. When wondered what might have transpired between Hannah and the Principal. “Oh, well. I guess that’s none of my business after all.. Las las wetin concern me? He said to himself, and walked away.

**********************************

Hannah was about leaving the school’s premises when she was called by Lucy, who was running towards her.

“Where are you going?” Lucy asked, breathing heavily.

“Home. I was expelled. The Principal wants to see my father.”

“Then, tell him the Principal wants to see him.”

“You think it is that easy? My Dad will literally kill me if he finds out.”

“What are we gonna do?” Lucy asked.

“I do not know.”

Hannah was about leaving when the school’s PA announced that every students should return to their various class rooms. This usually happens when there is an emergency or the Principal is about to find out the cause of misconduct or someone guilty of an offense.

Hannah turned back to Lucy who was staring at her.

“Let’s go, it will be okay.” Lucy said.

“How?”

“You are expelled doesn’t mean you should leave immediately. Just come.”

Hannah sighed. She hesitate to go. “But what could go wrong again?” She asked herself. “The worse has already being seen.” She thought inwards.

Hannah and Lucy both surged to the class, the Principal was already there, waiting for all the students to come in.

“It appears that” the Principal began.

“It appears that some of you have grown metal wings. You now have the temerity to harm a fellow student. No much talk here. Just tell me and we will settle this like civilized citizens, or else! We will have to do this the hard way.” He threatened.

Students began to murmur and this created a disorganized atmosphere.

“Quiet!” The Principal shrieked.

“I am just gonna ask you just once. Who put a glue on the seat?” He asked, and used his eyes to search critically for any unusual movement.

“I did.” A voice came from the back which was not Hannah’s.

“It was my fault, sir. I did it.” She said again.

The whole class directed their eyes towards the person that said she did it; wondering the reason for such inhuman act. Some were murmuring while some kept quiet, waiting for the Principal’s reaction.

Beads of sweat began to drip from the Principal’s face.

“I did it, sir.” She reiterated, trying to maintain her composure. The class began to murmur words that couldn’t be heard. Of course, it was because Lucy was the Principals daughter. Everybody knew he was gonna take it lightly with her. Was he expected to expel his own daughter? Since that’s what he is good at.

“Oh… Lucy” he began, knotting his tie properly.

“why did you put a glue on a student’s seat? As my daughter, you are expected to be familiar with the dos and don’ts of this school.”

“It wasn’t intentional. I brought the glue to school so I can use it on my books. Hannah also needed it.” Lucy replied boldly as she sighed, waiting for her father, the Principal to say something.

The Principal was quiet for a while, thinking on how to handle the situation. The whole class waited for him to pass judgment. They all wondered if he was gonna punish her for it because he punishes people for mild things. Of course, majority knew he wasn’t gonna do anything, some expected him to punish her, while some; otherwise.

The Principal turned to Hannah, not knowing it was actually her plan to put the glue on the seat.

“Is it true?” He asked Hannah who gave a positive answer with immediate alacrity.

“Oh, well.” He sighed and adjusted his spectacles.

“Meet me in my office.” He concluded and left the class. Some students knew he wasn’t gonna do anything, but they couldn’t do anything either.

“Thanks.” Hannah began…

“Thanks for having my back.” She said to Lucy, calmly.

“You are welcome. Maybe if you stop treating us like crap, we would have had you back when you were in trouble. You are just so full of yourself, Hannah. So, so full of yourself.” Lucy complained as she adjusted her chair, allowing her to freely stand up from it. She looked at Hannah for some seconds and turned away.

“I’m going to my Dad’s office.” Lucy said without looking back.

Hannah relocated to her new seat, of course she knew she’d be in trouble if Mr. Chadwick catches her in another seat. She sat in silence till their teacher came in…

“What do you think is wrong with her?” Oliver asked John who began bringing out his books from his bag.

“I don’t know. Maybe she’s feeling guilty. She still finds it hard to believe that Lucy would cover up for her.” John retorted.

“Cover up for her? How?”

“Remember the other day? When Eastern high came for a football challenge?” John asked as he search his bag ceaselessly, looking for his pen.

“Yes, I remember.”

“Vivian came to me. Asking me who would want to hard her cause she found razor blades inside her bag. We both know that the seat the glue was on was formerly Vivian’s seat. So? Connect it with Hannah. She’s a witch, that’s for sure.” John explain smartly.

“So, you think Hannah did this?”

“I know Hannah did it. She must be angry for seeing Vivian and I together.

“I think you are right.”

“I’m always right.”

“Don’t get too excited, brother.”

“Got an extra pen?”

“No, bro.”

“Then, I better go get one.” John stood up and took permission from his teacher. He went to the door and grabbed the door knob, turned it leftwards and pulled back. He left the class in a hurry, he knew Mr. Chadwick was being nice for letting him out during his teaching hour.

As he walked towards the corridor, he heard footsteps from his back. He wanted to ignore whoever it was, but the sound of the person’s step became louder which means the person was drawing closer. He turned back to glimpse and he saw a man, but something didn’t feel right about him.

“Excuse me.” The man said, thereby, alluring John’s attention the more. He turned back to take a proper look.

“Yes?” John said. Looking at the man critically, he was an advanced man who he thought he has seen before or a matching description of someone he thought he knew.

“I’m looking for my daughter. She was suppose to call me as soon as she got to school.” The man said, looking straight into John’s eyes.

“Who is this daughter of yours?”

John asked boldly.

“Hannah.” The man answered.

“Oh… this must be the father of that witch.” He said inwards.

“Just meet the Principal. He’ll send for her.” John replied, as he tried to remember where he had seen him.

“Okay. Thank you.” The man said as he left for the Principal’s office which was right in front of them. Of course it was obvious because the door of the office has an inscription on it. ‘The Principal.’

John wanted to leave, but he didn’t know when he called him back.

“Excuse me, sir?” He called.

“Yes?” The man said as he turned to John.

“What’s your name, Sir?” He asked boldly. The question was quite shocking to the man, but he answered anyway.

“My name is Bruce. Bruce Regan.” Bruce replied as he wondered why John asked.

John’s body became cold, as he remembered his mothers words…

FLASH BACK

“Fine! You wanna find him? His name is Bruce Regan, he should be 49 years old by now. He is tall, dark in complexion, afro hair cut, broad shouldered and wears suit most of the time!” Mrs. Described with gestures.

“Good luck finding him.”

“What is it?” Bruce asked, feeling concerned.

“Oh… it’s nothing.”

“Do you know me from somewhere?”

“No, no. Nice to meet you, Mr. Bruce.” John said, stretching out his hand for a hand shake, but Bruce hesitated, stretching out his hand slowly.

“The pleasure is all mine.”

“I wanna go get a pen, Dad.” John said nervously, not knowing when he called him Dad.

“Did you just call me Dad?” Bruce asked with a confused look.

“No, no. It’s a slang. You know, we teenagers use slangs nowadays. I gotta go.” He said as he feign a smile, leaving Bruce confused. John walked away, heading towards the school material store.

“What a weird kid.” Bruce said inwards, trying to make sense from what transpired between him and John. He turned towards the Principal’s office, scoffed, and headed there…

**************************************

John became confused, he finally meet his Dad. How would he tell him? Should he tell his mother? John was indecisive.

“I’m related to that witch! That pest!!!” John said to himself as the beads of sweat began to drip from his face. He was confused to the extent that he found himself in the female toilet. He wasn’t thinking straight. He was suppose to go to the material store, but headed to the toilet instead.

“How did I get here?” He turned around, he remembered Mr. Chadwick was in class. John hurried to the material store, bought a pen and hurried back to class.

He got to class, luckily, Mr. Chadwick left few minutes ago after giving them classwork. He hurried to his seat like someone who was being chased, he sat down, sweating profusely. He was extremely nervous.

“What’s up with you, man?” Oliver asked.

“Nothing, bro. I just ran too fast to the material store.”

“Okay, then. I’m taking Annabelle to the cinema today.” Oliver said without looking at Johns face, he focused on the classwork.

“Annabelle? Are you two dating?” John asked, looking straight at Oliver’s eyes. He was shocked.

“Dating? She’s my sister, stepsister though.. Have you ever had one?”

“No, no. Well, there was this girl I played with back then when I was a kid. I can’t remember her name, it’s a long time ago. I don’t even know how she looked like. You of all people should know that. Wait, why didn’t you tell me you have a sister?”

“It’s no big deal, brother. She was transferred here this semester. And besides, have you ever noticed that you and Hannah look alike?” Oliver asked as he dropped his pen, and and paid more attention to their discussion. John was shocked at his question, he turned to where Hannah was sitting, she had already met with her father before then. Their eyes caught with each other’s and John immediately averted his eyes.

“Look alike? That pest looks nothing like me.” He said looking serious.

“Well, your family sure do have a lot of mysteries.” Oliver said as he picked up his own and began to write again. John became quiet, he knew he had to do something. He had to find out why his father left him. It's like he was beginning to hate him already. “Bastard.” He cursed down his breath. All he wanted was the school hour to come to an end, he rushed his classwork, not minding the error he must has made. The school activities went smoothly, they were given a weekend home work. The whole situation got John thinking.

Finally, the school bell rang, signifying the end of the lecture hour for that day. He picked up his bag and hurried out, forgetting his textbook. “Hey, your textbook!” Oliver shouted, but John has already headed out. He surged through the school corridor, heading the the school exit. He was about to take a left turn when he saw Bruce and Hannah talking. He made sure he was not seen by hiding. He had to listen to their talk.

**************************************

“…well, we are not going home today.” Bruce said as he knot his tie.

“Why? Why can’t we?” Hannah asked, looking annoyed.

“Come on child. We are going to the 6th street to pay aunty Grace a visit.” He said as he placed both hands on her shoulders, trying to calm her down.

“Why can’t we go tomorrow? I mean, tomorrow is Saturday.” Hannah said as she folds her hand, pretending to be angry.

“I promised her today, Friday. Come on Hannah, we’ll go get ice cream after we leave this place. Or we can go to the cinema. Come on, I’ll double your allowance.”

“Okay, fine.” She smiled, her father has finally convinced her with goodies. Bruce placed his left hand across her shoulder and they headed out…”

************************************

“What?! Ice cream? Cinema? Double her allowance? My Mom would reduce mine and I won’t have supper for that day if I refused to go somewhere with her. No wonder she’s such a spoilt brat. Ah!” John said angrily, and left where he was eavesdropping. He followed them stealthily to the school park. Bruce and Hannah entered a black Acura RDX 2018 SUV. John made sure he mastered the plate number and jotted it down. He headed home as if everything was okay. He got home, ate his food and waited for his mother to come back. He wanted to tell her, but he knew better.

Mrs. Monroe arrived by 6:30pm. She was very tired, work wasn’t easy that day. She wore a black A-line dress, coupled with a black platform heels.

“Welcome Mom.” John greeted as he collect her bag from her.

“You look tired.” He added.

“Work wasn’t easy. I’ll be taking double shifts tomorrow.”

“Oh, okay. I made dinner, you can serve yourself in the kitchen.” John said as he walked inside, and dropped his mother’s bag in her room, and headed to his.

Mrs. Monroe was quite shocked. “When was the last time John prepared food in this house?” She asked herself. “Well, changes occur in teenagers.” She added and headed to the kitchen.

John laid on his bed looking at the ceiling. He wanted some answers. Aunty Grace? He has never heard of her. In the meantime, he had homework to do. He sat up, wearing only a black boxer shorts. He headed to where his bag was. Brought out the necessary things, but couldn’t find his textbook. “Oh crap. I carelessly left that textbook in school.” He shook his head vigorously, and walked to his shelf filled with his textbooks and his mother’s. He brought out an old text book, dusted it and went to his reading table, switched on his reading lamp and began to go through the textbook looking for answers. As he opened a page, three test papers fell, he picked it, looked at it and smiled. One was his torn primary one paper. He looked at the name and read it. “John Monroe.” He smiled again and dropped it, picked the other two. He had no idea who the owners were. The names were written with pencil and it has faded, it cannot be seen easily. He couldn’t read it well. He narrowed his eyes and tried to read it. He managed to figure it out. “Name: Gabriella Bruce, Class: kindergarten 1.” He couldn’t see the other one clearly, all he could see was the first alphabet ‘G’. So, he assumed it was for the same person. “Who is this person?” He asked himself, but he obviously do not have the answers he was looking for. He closed the textbook and put it back in the shelf, brought out the paper he jotted Bruce’s car plate number. He checked the time it was 7:02pm. He got dressed, wearing a black jean and a white Versace T-shirt, coupled with a black kito sandal, and moved towards his door, he was obviously sneaking out of the house. His mother was fast asleep due to fatigue.

John successfully sneaked out and was on the street, traders have not yet retired home. Power generators could be heard; creating a cacophonous atmosphere. He walked briskly, and entered another street by his left. “I have to get to the 6th street, he said to himself.”

John ran into a busy road panting heavily, he wanted to wrap things up before his mother finds out that he left the house. He held the paper that has Bruce’s car plate number written on it. “This must be the 6th street.” He said to himself. He looked around for clue that would lead him to Aunty Grace’s house. “Oh God” he said, “I hope I’m making the right decision.” He added. He walked down the street looking left and right for any Akura XDX that matches with the plate number. He was also being cautious as to not be grabbed by anybody. He walked endlessly for 20 minutes, almost giving up. He was about to leave for home when he heard familiar voices; laughing and chatting from the nearby bungalow house. Bruce’s car was not in that Vicinity, and John wondered where the car must have being parked. He walked stealthily towards the house. It was a small modern bungalow, painted with milk. It has well furnished brown wooden doors. The windows were open, and the front door was left ajar. Little wonder John was able to hear their voices. John walked to the window side, peeping through it. He saw Bruce and Hannah, and a woman he assumed to be Aunty Grace. They were having dinner, seated round a round table with each of them occupying a seat. He had the thought of going inside, uninvited, but he knew it will be rude and childish, and who knows whichever drama Hannah would put up. “That witch. She ruins everything.” He said inwards, and turned to leave, but saw a child in front of him. The little boy was staring at him strangely with catarrh on his nose. “Go inside” John whispered. “It’s not safe out here.” He added, but the boy kept staring at him. He wanted to leave but the kid turns his head to whichever direction he went. “Go now, chop-chop.”John said using his hand to push him. John paused as he heard footsteps close to the door, he guessed it was someone, probably looking for the child because he has stayed outside for too long. “Mama!” The kid shouted, thereby, alluring the attention of the mother who quickened her steps. John wanted to run away that moment to avoid being seen or worse, branded as a thief which he is not. He was half way out of the compound when he was halted by Aunty Grace’s commanding voice. “Stop!” She shouted as Hannah and Bruce ran out of the house. “Who are you?” She asked. “I uhmm. I’m nobody” John said as he turned around slowly which made Hannah to see his face clearly.

“John?” She said.

“Hey, Hannah!” John said, smiling. Trying to make it pure. He knew his life was in Hannah’s hands now.

“Please, please. Come and hug me as usual.” John prayed inwards. Fortunately, Hannah ran towards him and John spread his hand widely as if he has loved Hannah from day 1. They hugged for more than 15sec, John held her tight because his life depended on it.

“You know him?” Aunty Grace asked confusingly, as she recognized him at once.

“Yes, he’s my friend.” Hannah retorted as Bruce moved forward to get a closer look at John. He recognized him as he saw his face. “Isn’t this the weird kid from school today?” He said inwards.

“You are James, right?” Bruce’s asked.

“No, I’m John.” John said as he turned to Aunty Grace. “Oh… she’s the Aunty Grace. This woman has been staring at me whenever she seems me on the street. I wonder her relationship with Hannah.” He said inwards and adverted his eyes.

“Oh, yes. John. What are you…”

“What are you doing here?” Hannah cuts in, preventing Bruce from completing his question.

“I was just strolling and I heard your voice so I decided to visit.” John lied.

“Why were you running away?” Aunty Grace asked nervously, waiting for an answer.

“Well, I was not invited so, I tried to leave without being seen. Nothing more, nothing less.” John lied again, but Aunty Grace didn’t buy it. “Does this mean he found out?” Aunty Grace asked herself.

“Well, since you are here. Come have dinner with us.” Hannah requested with smiles on her face.

“No, thanks. I was about to leave. I only wanted to say Hi.” John turned down Hannah’s request immediately.

“Are you sure you don’t want to have dinner with us?” Bruce asked.

“Yes, yes. Thanks for your kindness. I’ll be on my way now.” John said as he turned to Hannah.

“I’ll see you tomorrow at school.” He said.

“Yeah. I’ll see you when I see you.” Hannah said with smiles.

John was about to leave when he noticed Hannah’s necklace, he was looking at it, trying to remember where he saw it.

“What? Anything?” Hannah asked, showing concern.

“No, no. Nice necklace.” John said smiling and bid them farewell which they reciprocated.

He ran home as much as his legs could take him, but he couldn’t continue running. He decided to stop and catch his breath and that was the moment he saw a sign board on the ground near a welding shop. It was obviously the signboard was made there, and it is not suppose to be placed there, and besides, the welder is not done. “Alberta Nolan street up ahead.” He read it to himself and sighed. The day was getting darker, he decided to continue running home. He ran out of 16th street to the street where his home is. The roof of his house could almost be seen at the far end. “Almost there.” He said and continued running.

John arrived at his house by 9:35pm, hoping his mother would be asleep. He opened the door silently, and stepped his foot inside, then the other followed. He successful entered without making a sound. “Phew. What a relief.” He said and sighed as he turned to see his mother, folding her hands with a scary look on her face.

“Where did you go?” Mrs. Monroe asked furiously.

“Geez. Calm down. I went to a friends house.”

“To do what?”

“Duh. To get a textbook.”

“Why didn’t you wait till tomorrow? Tomorrow is Saturday.”

“Well, I was eager to do my assignment.” John said and turned to leave for his room.

“This your friends house, where is it located?” Mrs. Monroe asked.

“Mom. Why these incessant questions?” John asked angrily.

“I asked you a question, Johnny boy. Where?”

“Alberta Nolan street! Now, leave me alone!” John said as he went straight to his room and banged his door angrily. He lied about the address, he didn’t want to give her the real street address so he gave her the one he saw on the signboard, but unfortunately, that was the street Bruce and Hannah live.

“Alberta Nolan street.” Mrs. Monroe muttered. Of course she knew it was the street Bruce and Hannah live. She picked up her phone from the center table and dialed a number which started ringing almost immediately.

“Hello?” The receiver answered.

“Bruce, we need to talk.” Mrs Monroe said.

“Alberta Nolan street.” Mrs. Monroe muttered. Of course she knew it was the street Bruce and Hannah live. She picked up her phone from the center table and dialed a number which started ringing almost immediately.

“Hello?” The receiver answered.

“Bruce, we need to talk.” Mrs Monroe said as she walked out of her house, making sure she was far from John’s hearing.

“What is it to talk about?” Bruce replied furiously.

“You still have my number. Isn’t that amazing?”

“I can never forget the number of the woman who stole my child.”

“Stole your child? It’s more like I left with him without telling you.”

“Where are you? Bloody witch.” Bruce shrieked.

“Around, Bruce. Around. It seems he came to your street few minutes ago.”

“My street? How?”

“You are still a busy man, Bruce. You never care to observe those around you. It’s all about making money. We could have been a perfect couple, but you went behind my back and married another woman.”

“I loved Rachel with all my heart.

“It is quite unfortunate what Happened to her.”

“I trusted you with my children, to watch over them while I’m out settling things.”

“Oh I’m still watching over John.”

“John? Is that his name now? I hope you have not fed my son with lies? Huh? Just wait till he realize you are not his mother.”

“Trust me. He’ll never find out that I’m not his mother.” Mrs. Monroe said and hung up, sighed and walked back inside the house. She failed to notice Oliver was eavesdropping from the next building close to her house. He was sent on an errand that night, and wanted to use the opportunity to give him his textbook. Due to what he heard, he decided to give him in school on Monday.

*************************************

2 days past, John didn’t confront his mother concerning the test papers he saw or about his father. He acted as if everything was okay.

Monday came with a flash. It was a sunny morning. The sun that came through the window illuminated every corner of the room. John laid on his bed, wearing only a brief shorts with both hands supporting the back of his head in a way that he faced the ceiling. He thought about the whole situation. Hannah is his sister all this while? Who is Gabriella Bruce? Does he have another sister he doesn’t know about? He asked himself these questions, but he doesn’t have the answers he was looking for. This gave him sleepless nights.

“Oh God.” He said, and sighed.

He checked the time, it was 8:00am, he closed his eyes and let out a deep breath.

“I’m late for school again.”

He got up from his bed looking tired, and stretched both hands apart. He trudged to the bathroom tying a towel around his waist for a quick bath. John had a lot going on in his mind. He had mysteries to solve. His bath only took few minutes, he came out looking wet as expected from someone who took a bath. He walked sluggishly towards his wardrobe to search for his Monday school wears. He picked up a black FILA T-shirt and a black off-white trouser, coupled with a black plain shoe.

“Black Monday.” He muttered.

He applied cream to his skin, and wore his clothes, looking smart as usual. He picked up his bag pack and arrange his books inside, including the ones on his reading table. He zipped his back and headed out of his room with a gloomy face. He got to the parlor where he is suppose to see him Mom, but he couldn’t find her. He left to check the kitchen, she was not there.

“She must have left early. Maybe she’s in her room.” John said inwards. He wasn’t in the mood for eating that morning so he left the house on empty stomach.

John entered the street and he felt a soft breeze on his face. He walked amongst other pedestrians who had their various destinations to go.

Walking to school that morning was like an Herculean task for him. He got to Western High in a heart beat. Students could be seen in various corners of the school having different conversations as he wondered why they were outside. He expected classes to have started. He surged through the school corridors heading to his class. He got there and pushed the class door gently to find students disorganized. He realised that all the teachers are having a meeting, which is usually held every second week of resumption. He headed to the seat where his friends gathered; chattering and laughing.

“Johnny boy!” They shouted as they saw him.

“Hey, guys. What’s up?” He said sluggishly.

“What’s up with the face, dude?” Christopher asked as he gave him a playful punch on his shoulder.

“It’s nothing, guys.” John replied.

“Come on. You’ve never looked like this.” Richard said, looking worried. They all pressured till he finally agreed to tell them. John spent 6 minutes narrating everything

“What?!” Richard exclaimed.

“You mean Hannah is your sister?” Christopher asked with his eyes wide open.

“Who is Bruce Gabriella?” Oliver asked with one hand on the desk supporting his jaw.

“Guys. I don’t know who Gabriella is. I’ll try to find out.” John said as silence took over. They all kept quiet, looking shocked.

“John.” Oliver called.

“Yes?” John said as he turned to Oliver, wondering what he was about to say.

“I have something to tell you. Last night I"

“Settle down!” Mr. Harrison said almost immediately he entered the class, thereby, stopping Oliver from finishing his statement. They all organized themselves, students returned to their various seats and brought out their necessary materials for the subject.

The class went smoothly, questions from their previous topic were asked asked by the teacher and answers were given by different students. Those who were unable to answer were spared. The class came to an end and the other subject teacher, Mr. Chadwick came in. His class went as strict as ever. They treated a new topic and answered different questions. Finally, recess time came, signified by the school bell. Students began to walk out in groups. John stayed behind with his friends.

“You wanted to tell me something, correct?” John asked Oliver who was busy writing.

“Oh, yes. That will be later.” He postponed it when he saw Hannah coming toward them. Oliver dropped his pen inside his book and closed it. He sat up and excused John and Hannah because it was the right thing to do. Richard, and Christopher also did the same. Hannah sat down besides John in a way she faced him.

“What’s up?” Hannah broke the silence.

“Nothing much. Why are you looking sad?” John replied.

“Nothing. Is it a coincidence? We are both looking sad.” Hannah said as she forced out a smile.”

“What’s on your mind?” John asked without looking at Hannah’s face.

“Well, late yesterday. Some minutes after you left. My Dad got a call from someone and excused himself. He facial expression changed when he saw the caller, some kind of anger. I never wanted to eavesdrop at his conversation, but curiosity got the best of me. He said something about the caller stealing his son. I wanted to ask him about it, but I was afraid.”

John looked at her when she said “called stealing her son.” He wondered who it was, it was like the whole situation was becoming worse. His mother never told him anything about having a sister. John was lost in thoughts, but Hannah’s voice brought him back to reality.

“What’s happening?” Hannah asked looking concerned as she caressed the necklace on her neck which allured john attention to it.

“That necklace.” He thought. There was something written on it. He looked at it closely. Lo and Behold. Gabriella was written on it. His heart began to pound.

“Who’s Gabriella?” John managed to ask.

“Oh. It’s my other name.” Hannah retorted as she smiled.

John was in shock. The necklace looked like something he has seen before, somewhere.

“My mother’s room.” He shouted as he stood up and ran away from the class like a mad man. He managed to get pass the school security, running home as fast as his legs could take him.

He got home and opened the door forcefully and headed straight to his mother’s room. He checked the wardrobe but couldn’t find it there.

“Where could this possibly be?” He asked himself as he stood arms akimbo, sweating profusely. He walked to the bed and raised the foam up, there was a black box inside. He used one hand to pick it up and let go off the foam.

He open it only to see an identical necklace to Hannah’s.

“Gabriel” he read it out. Many thing began to go through his mind. “If Hannah is Gabriella, does that mean he is Gabriel? Does that mean they are not step siblings but siblings from the same parents? Un-identical twins?” He asked himself these questions as tears began to drop from his eyes. He quickly wiped them off when he heard the door leading to the parlor creaked. He tried to compose himself. He walked out of his mothers room, thinking his mother has returned. He quickly dropped the box where he found it, and went out of his mother’s room only to see Oliver, wearing a worried look.

“What’s up with you man? Why did you run off like that?” Oliver asked.

“Oh I came to check on something. Well, never mind. You were gonna tell me something back in class, correct?” John tried to change the topic.

“Oh, yes, but it’s not my place to tell you.” Oliver retorted as both boys turned to the door to see Mrs. Monroe coming in.

“John. Aren’t you suppose to be in school?” Mrs. Monroe asked, looking surprised. She totally ignored Oliver’s presence.

“John?” She called when she notice tears dropping from His eyes.

“Mom.” John began.

“Tell me. Who is Gabriel and Gabriella?” He asked.

“I don’t know what you are talking about.”

“Tell me!” John shrieked as Mrs. Monroe began to cry too.

“Gabriel is your real name. Gabriella is your sisters name.” She said tearfully as she tried to go close to him, but John took 2 steps backwards. Seeing this, Oliver excused himself.

“Where is she?!”

“She’s with your father, Bruce.”

“Oh, God. Did Dad really leave us? How many secrets have you kept from me?!” John said crying.

Mrs. Monroe felt the need to tell him everything.

“Bruce didn’t leave us.” She began.

“I took you away from him.”

“What?! Why?! Mom, why?! Why these lies?” John asked tearfully. It was like his whole world was spinning ceaselessly.

“One more thing.” Mrs. Monroe began.

“What?”

“I’m not your real mother. Your real mother died in a car crash.”

John’s jaw dropped. Everything was too much for him to take. He felt like he was losing his sight, he couldn’t hold himself. He collapsed on the floor and lost consciousness.

**************************************

John opened his eyes 48 minutes later. He found himself in the hospital close to his house, opened his eyes to see Bruce, Hannah and Aunty Grace.

“What happened?” John asked.

“You collapsed.” Hannah said, crying on his shoulder. It wasn’t easy for her too after the explanation. She had a crush on her brother? Oh, this world. Hers was quite different because her father, Bruce didn’t lie to her. He just didn’t tell her everything.

“Dad?” John called, crying.

“Hello, weird kid.” He said, holding John’s hand, and started crying. Aunty Grace was touched too. She always knew there was something about John, little wonder she stares at him anytime she seems him on the street. “The resemblance between them is uncanny. I miss you Rachael. I wish you are here to see them all grown.” She said inwards.

John looked around for Mrs. Monroe, she was not there.

“Where’s Mrs. Monroe? My mother.” He asked.

Knowing who John was looking for, Mr. Bruce replied: “she’s outside.”

John stood up from the hospital bed almost immediately. He ran out of the hospital.

“John!” They called and ran after him.

John ran fast to the exit. He got outside and saw Mrs. Monroe sitting on a bench.

“Mom!” He called, and Mrs. Monroe stood up at the sight of him. She has almost cried her eyes out. John ran towards her and gave her a tight hug.

“John, I’m sorry.” She said crying.

“I know, Mom. I still love you.”

“Oh, my Johnny boy.” She said and cried ceaselessly.
